Judge Paulie – It is your responsibility to call the court in session and keep ‘order’ in the court for the time line. You are also going to follow the ‘script’ and call each person to the stand in the correct order. IF the courts get out of line, you will ask one of the 3 Bailiffs to address the person or persons creating the disturbance to settle down.
You will advise each Lawyer (including the defense lawyer) that they have 1-3 minutes to present their argument (case).
You will also close the session.
Next week you will ask each of the lawyers to present their ‘case’ and each jury to present their ‘punishment’
Court Reporter – Mia – You will be provided a time line and will help the Judge keep the proceedings on track. You will also keep notes for the proceedings. You do not have to write a lot. Just keep track of each Lawyers ‘punishment’ request and the defense response – for example – State Lawyer = requested public apology – Defense = unfair because___. During the trial the Judge may ask you to restate the points of the case.
Bailiffs (Manny, Jarrod, Chris) - It is your responsibility to assist the Judge with keeping the court in order. You follow the direction of the Judge. If he asks you to address someone in the court – you will go over to that person and quietly whisper to them to stop talking. If they do not listen to you, you will have permission to take that person out of the court and into the library – they are not to stay in the library – this is just to demonstrate how important it is that everyone pays attention.
You will each be responsible for taking the jury to the library to deliberate. It is important you keep each Jury separate as they are not allowed to discuss the case amongst each other. You will oversee the following Jury.
Manny = God Jarrod = State Chris = Street
‘Lawyer for the ‘Defendant’’ (Koreena) - it is your responsibility to counter the ‘punishment’ chosen by each Lawyer. Keep in mind this is an ‘alleged crime’ The ‘Victim’ did not admit he was hurt nor did the ‘Defendant’ admit or express sorrow or wrong doings. You will be given time to rebut (counter argue) each Lawyers case. You will have about 1-3 minutes so you will need to keep it brief.
‘Defendant’ (Mat) – There is no proof you committed the crime. What we would like you to consider is IF you did – would you respond to the ‘Victim’ and apologize. We are looking to explain social justice. We would appreciate it if you would ‘step-up’ and address the court to let them know IF you caused the ‘Victim’ to be upset – you did not mean to do so. We also want you to find a way to build a friendship with the person – like asking to hang out or something.
Victim (TBD) – Since the point of this exercise is Social Justice – We would like you to forgive the ‘Defendant’ and work to find a way to get along with him.

Social Justice-Handing down sentencing
Handing down sentencing
The first component of social justice is action. This activity calls for analyzing a social justice problem and taking appropriate action to try to address it.
Review Case:
Considering all these ideas - which punishment is least likely to be considered as supporting Social Justice? Why?Which is most likely to support Social Justice? Why?
What makes up a just society?
Do you ever act in ways that promote social justice?
What you consider unjust or unfair.
How do you know injustice when you see it?
Think about what it would take to eliminate the injustice presented in this case.
ROMANS 10:3 - For they, not knowing the justice of God, and seeking to establish their own, have not submitted themselves to the justice of God.
JOHN 20:23 - If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone’s sins, they are retained.”
The message we would like you to remember is to “Be very careful seeking justice through unjust actions as doing is unsupportive Social Justice”.

Mat and the ‘Victim’ were outside the gym after 4th period last Wednesday. Several students heard Mat & the ‘Victim’ arguing - SOMEONE - reported to the principal they overheard there was going to be a fight in the lower yard after school. Mat & the ‘Victim’ met after school – the details of what happened are unclear - by the time the principal got there several students claimed Mat hit or pushed the ‘Victim’. The ‘Victim’ has no marks and would not answer whether or not Mat had in fact hit or pushed.
Mike: Mat being tried by 3 juries of his peers - Representing the State = Evan - Representing the Street - Kim and Representing God = Ariana and representing the ‘Defendant’- Koreena. Our Court Reporter - Mia will be taking notes, so if anyone needs clarification - you will address Judge Paulie and he will ask her to read the notes. Vicky: As each side presents their case for how to handle the alleged crime - keep in mind the following: What is social justice? – Is there a 'punishment' fit the crime? - What is the point of handing down punishment? - Which of the 3 points - State - Street - God seems to reflect the ideas of Social Justice (or being fair to our fellow man)?
The first component of social justice is action. This activity calls for analyzing a social justice problem and taking appropriate action to try to address it.

Judge Paulie: You have heard from 4 Lawyers and the ‘Defendant’. It is your responsibility to choose a ruling based on the cases presented. You can choose rule for or against the ‘punishment’ handed down by the lawyer. You will have 4 minutes to discuss and take a vote. Be sure not to speak to each other regarding the decision for your group.

Judge Paulie: Thank you. Will the Representative for God’s Law read its verdict.
God’s Law Representative: (reads verdict)
Judge Paulie: Thank you. The facilitators will provide direction and then court will close session for today.
Conclusion:
Kelly: Before you choose which ruling you think should be handed down, here are a few key points: What was the purpose of this exercise?Remember when the case was presented we asked:
What is justice?
Does the 'punishment' fit the crime?
What is the point of handing down punishment?
Which of the 3 points - State - Street - God seems to reflect the ideas of Social Justice (or being fair to our fellow man)?
Also, consider what makes up a just society?
Mike: State law is set forth as rules to follow - if 'we' follow them, then we would not need to hand down punishments. Ask yourself - do you really think State Law should preside over a fight between two students? Or is there a better way to handle the situation.
Is eye for an eye as presented in Street Justice the correct response and does it support Social Justice.
Vicky: Now consider God's Law - does this support the ideas of Social Justice? How do we make the world a better place for ourselves and each other? Not just in this instance but in general - Remember, this was a scenario - but each day we face challenging decisions - on how to treat others, how to reach out and help, and how to support our family, friends, and even strangers.
Be very careful seeking justice through unjust actions as doing so is unsupportive of Social Justice.
